FAQ

Unsecured business finance: frequently asked questions

Plain answers to the questions owners without property ask most.

Eligibility and amounts

Can I get a business loan without property?

Yes. Unsecured business finance is sized on turnover and business bank statements. Options for trading businesses typically range from $5,000 to $500,000.

How much can I borrow unsecured?

It mostly depends on average monthly revenue, time trading, existing repayments, account conduct and industry. The free borrowing estimator gives an indicative range from your own figures.

How long do I need to have been trading?

It varies by lender and product. Options are thinnest in the first months and widen at around 12 and 24 months. Equipment finance is often available sooner because the asset secures itself.

Can sole traders apply?

Yes. Because a sole trader and the business are legally the same, personal credit and personal commitments form part of the assessment, and a separate business account helps a lot.

I rent my home. Is that a problem?

Not for unsecured finance. The assessment focuses on the business's cash flow, which is what unsecured lending is built on.

Can I borrow more than $500,000?

Unsecured facilities rarely go beyond that, because they're sized on cash flow. Larger needs can combine equipment and invoice finance, be staged, or, if you choose to use property, be met with a secured loan from $20,000 to $5,000,000.

Security and guarantees

Does unsecured mean nothing is on the line?

No property is pledged, but directors usually sign a personal guarantee, and some lenders register a security interest over business assets on the PPSR.

Is a personal guarantee the same as a mortgage?

No. A guarantee is a personal promise to repay if the business can't. It isn't registered on your home's title. It is still a serious commitment, so read it carefully.

Do I have to use my home if I own one?

No. Keeping the family home out of business borrowing is a legitimate choice, and unsecured finance exists for exactly that.

Credit, tax and existing debts

Does enquiring affect my credit score?

No. There's no credit check when you first enquire. A credit check only happens if you proceed with a specific application.

Can I get finance with bad credit?

Past credit issues are considered case by case. Recency, severity, whether items are paid and how the business trades now all matter.

Can I get finance if I owe the ATO?

Often, yes. A lodged BAS and an ATO payment plan that's being met read far better than an unmanaged balance. ATO debt is considered case by case.

I already have two advances running. Can I get another?

It's harder, because lenders subtract existing repayments from what the business can carry, and stacked advances are a common reason for declines. Consolidating or finishing one first is often the better path.

Costs, speed and process

Why don't you publish interest rates?

Every facility is priced on the business's individual circumstances, so a published rate would mislead more people than it helped. We'll explain the real costs of any option before you commit.

How fast can I get funded?

Same-day funding is possible for smaller unsecured amounts when the file is straightforward. Larger or more complex requests take longer.

Will my details be sent to lots of lenders?

No. A real person reads your enquiry and matches it properly. We don't spray enquiries across a list of lenders.

What documents will I need?

Usually business bank statements (often shared digitally), ID, ABN or company details, BAS status and quotes or invoices for what you're funding. We'll tell you exactly what's needed if you proceed.

What can I use the funds for?

Business purposes only: stock, wages, BAS and tax bills, fit-outs, equipment, marketing, growth and cash-flow gaps.
